At Home Euthanasia

What happens during a home visit?

On arrival at your home we will take time to talk through what will happen, answer any questions you may have, and ensure you feel comfortable before we begin.

We will start by giving your pet a gentle sedation to help them feel calm and sleepy.

When you are ready, the next step involves gently administering an anaesthetic medication which gradually slows the heart until it stops.

What happens next is up to you. Some people like to bury their pet in the garden, whilst others prefer cremation. We will discuss this with you at the initial booking, so we understand your wishes beforehand.
If you would like, Starlight Vets can provide transport to the crematorium of your choice. Find futher information here.

Quality of Life Consultation
What happens during a consultation?

Making decisions about the timing of euthanasia for a much loved family member can feel overwhelming. I am here to support this process, taking into account the many different factors which may influence your decision.
This discussion utilises a quality of life assessment tool as a framework for objective decision making. This can help by removing the guess work faced by many pet owners.
During my career as a small animal vet, I have supported many pet owners through this difficult time and, in addition I been there with my own much loved family pets.

A quality of life assessment lasts between 30-45 minutes and can take place by phone or in your home, you decide. You can find further information here.
